I am interested in a better way of entering non-admit (i.e. consults) data into Neodata (not the consult module) so that I may produce a note similar, but slightly different, to the admission note for those neonates admitted to our nicu.  A template note in the consults module is just too burdensome to use!

My current workaround, I have been doing a New admission in Neodata, then at least placing Transitional/Consult in the admission indications so that coders will recognize this as different than admit.  Once I complete all of the information in Neodata, I print paper copy of note and place in the transitional/consult chart.  I then export the patient information to a file so that if the neonate later gets admitted, I can retrieve the information without having to re-do.  Then I delete the patient from the database (not remove from list)

Reason(s) for doing this:
1) no transcription/no followup editing
2) speed and familiarity with Neodata
3) familiar output to what all of our providers are used to seeing.
4) later retrieval should the patient be admitted, no re-do

It seems that future iterations might include a more robust consult module for this type of thing.

If your needs are more complex than the Consult Module supports, then your approach sounds like a good one. One suggestion would be to create a separate database just for such patients, and "admit" them directly into this. You would then have no need to export and delete them from the normal database.
